"FISH AND WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST GETS PROBATION, FINE IN PELT-SALE SCHEME"

November 6, 2019

U.S. Fish & Wildlife biologist who pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of violating federal law in transporting and selling 51 bobcat pelts, with at least five co-conspirators, to international fur traders, was sentenced Tuesday to three years probation and $55,100 in restitution and fines.
During sentencing before U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger in a Grand Junction federal courtroom, Bingham and his attorney, Ashley Petrey, asked for leniency in the case, saying "he's paid the ultimate price" when he lost his job, likely won't ever be able to work in his chosen field again, lost his ability to hunt and his right to own firearms. "Incarceration here is not the appropriate remedy," Petrey told Krieger. "Mr. Bingham has learned his lesson, and he sits before you full of remorse. He sits before you a broken man."

"PUBLIC NURSING UNDER COVER"

November 23, 2018

Colorado Revised Statute 25-6-302 is only one sentence long: "A mother may breast-feed in any place she has a right to be."
Grand Junction attorney Ashley Petrey said while she's never dealt with a case involving breast-feeding, Colorado's law is clear. "There's no room for interpretation and no room for argument in that statute," Petrey said. "It's meant to be so crystal clear that it can't be challenged by anyone at any time. It leaves no door open, which is so rare in statute."

"JURY BEGINS DELIBERATION IN SILVERTHORNE SEXUAL ASSAULT TRIAL"

July 23, 2018

"In Petrey's closing statements for the defense, she called Hunt's assertion that no woman would consent to such acts as 'antiquated and sexist,' providing the jury with sex-positive examples in pop culture over recent years, such as '50 Shades of Grey,' to imply a social shift in hegemony in the way modern Americans view sex.  'Don't let the government convince you this is beyond expectation,' said Petrey. 'Consensual group sex is not outside the realm of possibilities. It's happening every day.'"

"ERWIN FACES HIS ACCUSER, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, IN SECOND DAY OF TESTIMONY"

July 18, 2018

"During cross-examination by defender Ashley Petrey, the witness recanted parts of her story [...] Petrey pressed the [alleged victim] on the fact that she told several people she believed she had been drugged — there were no traces of any date rape drugs found in her blood or urine samples — implying she made it up after the fact. Petrey continued to assert that the woman had consented to group sex that night, and lied about it for financial and reputational reasons. [...]"

"JUDGE REJECTS RELIGIOUS ARGUMENT"

January 14, 2018

"Carbondale-based defense attorney Ashley Petrey said in an interview Friday her client's beliefs are sincere, if 'odd and unpopular.'  'He truly believes these theories about the United States government, and he does treat it like his religion,' Petrey said. 'It's very intertwined with God and who created man. … He should be entitled to practice those beliefs.'"
